Temtem Just Inherits “Some” Simple Gameplay Pokemon, Everything else is original

Temtem is an upcoming massively multiplayer creature-collection adventure inspired by Pokemon but it would be a grave injustice to maintain a similar comparison throughout. Crema, based in Madrid, has put a lot of work into giving Temtem its own identity and now the developer wants fans to know the same.

In a recent interview with, game director Guillermo Andrades discussed some of the unique elements which distinguish the game from the well-known Pokemon franchise.

To begin with, Pokemon took out only some basic gameplay mechanics. Andrades was pretty upfront about everything else that was original and made from scratch in Temtem. That includes all-new creatures, characters, areas of exploration, the world, and the storyline. Those coming in from Pokemon will be better able to ascertain, so to speak, that the game is’ not’ a clone.

Secondly, one of Crema’s greatest emphasis was on the features online. “Temtem is built around having all of the online features fully integrated into the core experience,” Andrades explained. “From seeing other players around you, or having seamless interactions with them, or enjoying the full campaign in real cooperatives.”

Another area where Temtem sets himself apart from Pokemon is in the battles. We were built purposely to be more competitive. Many fights will also provide more strategic depth and players should know they can’t just skip through every skirmish. Battles are more competitive oriented, and this affects the main story too. Since battles are more strategic, in Temtem it is not possible to just complete the campaign with your starter and using just a couple of techniques so players need to constantly think about what’s the better strategy to use in every battle.

One thing that can be ignored at Temtem is the changes in quality of life. The average player experience is improved by these small changes (or updates). There are items such as the surfboard and hook which are used automatically to navigate specific areas. Temtem is due to be released on 21 January 2020 for Windows. The thrifty digital storefront acts as publisher, Humble Bundle. Nevertheless, the game will also be available on Steam, and can be wished for here. Those who are accustomed to couch-gaming will be happy to know that Temtem has full support for controllers.
