No Borders Philosophy

Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering was conceived as a ‘no boundaries’ school. Since its inception in 2007, the school has sought to promote this core philosophy in both research and teaching programs.

The interdisciplinary focus of research brings together top faculty from six departments to investigate scientific questions that address diverse topics. The Departments of Biology and Chemistry share a strong program in drug discovery that requires input from biological and chemical perspectives. The Department of Biology supports two computational biologists, who are trained in basic computer science and have little or no prior experience in wetland biology, although their work is very important to biologists. Half of the physics faculty consists of electrical engineers. The blend between electrical engineering and computer science is even more pronounced. Finally, despite the challenges faced by the Pakistan Engineering Council, the decision to place Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemistry underlines our commitment to a progressive and forward-looking vision of science and engineering.

These connections result from joint research projects. Many of these projects aim to address the greatest challenges facing our society and region. These include the challenges of transportation, climate, urbanization, health informatics and disease progression tracking, human-computer interaction, augmented reality, environmental and environmental sensing, and digital sustainable agriculture. New services in agriculture, medical physics, and bioengineering, biophysics also reflect our commitment to working at synapses between functional units. Seven research streams that we recently identified in a scoping survey of SSE research groups highlight deeply intertwined interactions and the melting pot of minds. Many of these directions have culminated in research centers such as the Center for Water Informatics, the LUMS Energy Institute, and the Technology for People Initiative.

Spirit also permeates our curriculum and learning campaigns. Newly introduced courses with SCI and ENGG codes like Introduction to Environmental Science, Bionanotechnology, and several interesting ideas introduced for the summer semester indicate a fusion in teaching. The Departments of Electrical and Computer Science contribute to the teaching of several courses, particularly in Data Science and Machine Learning, Physics and Engineering, Electromagnetics and Mathematical Modeling, Chemistry and Biology, and Biochemistry, etc. They come together. These interactions are rare by Pakistani standards. Our faculty can oversee projects across departments and many interactions are enabled that cut across the boundaries of LUMS’s five schools.

The school’s core curriculum allows students to be well-trained in all basic sciences and engineering. This is quite rare. So for example, a biologist takes two math courses and every student in school takes Bio 101—learning about genetics, microbiology, and evolution.

Finally, I would like to point out that the school shares several research facilities, particularly in the SSE main labs. Chemistry and Physics jointly propose the establishment of a center for nanoscience and nanotechnology and many schools committees such as safety, affinity, and cross-curricular interactions promoting cross-border interactions.

The Department of Mathematics at LUMS invites applications from outstanding candidates for tenure-track positions. Full consideration will be given to candidates in all areas of pure and applied mathematics, and statistics with the ability to teach a wide range of core courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Department of Mathematics is one of the most dynamic and active departments in the region. The Department has the prestigious honor of being selected as an Emerging Regional Center for Mathematics to promote mathematical research and collaboration in the region. ICTP has selected the department as an ICTP-affiliated center for the joint International Mathematics Master IMM-LUMS program. The department is housed in the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), established in 2000 to provide the highest quality education and promote interdisciplinary research and collaboration between natural sciences, computer science, and engineering programs. was done. Successful tenure candidates are expected to conduct independent and original research at a higher academic level, demonstrate academic leadership, apply for national and international research grants, and collaborate with other researchers within and outside the department. . Responsibilities for the Turnover Track position include teaching core and elective courses in the area of ​​expertise and related subjects.
