Indus Hospital and Health Network

Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN) provides quality healthcare absolutely free to millions of deserving patients through its nationwide network of hospitals in Pakistan. Starting with just one hospital in Karachi in 2007, IHHN now manages several tertiary and secondary care hospitals, physical rehabilitation centers, regional blood centers, community health centers, and various public health programs spread across Pakistan. Is.

Indus Hospital & Health Network aims to provide non-discriminatory, quality healthcare to all in state-of-the-art facilities across Pakistan. IHHN is a non-profit healthcare system that relies entirely on public donations. To achieve its mission, IHHN is partnering with individuals, corporates, international donor agencies, academic institutions, international partners, and provincial and federal governments.

Indus Hospital and Health Network and the Government of Punjab

Punjab is the second largest province of Pakistan in terms of land area. With 53% of the total population (110 million people) living in Punjab, the province faces a significant burden of infectious diseases, accounting for more than half of all cases of tuberculosis in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s population is growing with a birth rate of 22 per 1000 people. Hence, there is a growing need for public-private partnerships to address the growing health demands. Indus Hospital and Health Network is working with the Government of Punjab to serve the region and help make universal healthcare a reality.

IHHN and Government of Punjab Public Private Partnership

In the health sector, a public-private partnership is defined as an institutional relationship between the government and the private sector to achieve a common goal based on a mutually agreed division of labor and resources. They are supported by large legal frameworks, institutional frameworks, and sustained political championing.

Achievements and collaborations

With support and funding provided through a partnership with the Government of Punjab, IHHN has expanded its network across the province to achieve its goal of providing quality and free healthcare to all. Important steps have been taken.

Under Public Private Partnership Programme, IHHN is managing 7 Government Hospitals and 2 Regional Blood Centers in Punjab. All these are equipped with modern facilities and experienced and trained healthcare staff.

Public health initiatives
IHHN’s Community Health Directorate is running a number of public health initiatives to address key healthcare challenges in Pakistan. These are data-driven programs aimed at reducing the burden of communicable diseases in Pakistan.

Management of diabetes

A Diabetes Management Program (DMP) helps patients manage their diabetes. It aims to reduce and delay the onset of diabetes complications by providing better control and monitoring. The Diabetes Management Program started its clinical services at Korangi Campus in September 2014. DMP is integrated with PCP for better convenience. DMP provides free insulin to patients. Since 2014, 13,000 patients have been successfully enrolled in the program.

HIV program

IHNN, Korangi launched an HIV program in 2016, which focuses on people who inject drugs infected with HIV. This comprehensive program includes staff support in the form of psychological counseling and field workers who ensure timely medication and follow-up.

Hepatitis Control Program

According to the Lancet, Pakistan has the second highest burden of hepatitis C in the world. Thus, IHNN launched its Hepatitis Control Program in 2016 to reduce chronic hepatitis through community and facility-based prevention, screening measures, and timely treatment.

Center for Essential Surgery

The Center for Essential Surgery operates the Safe Circumcision Program, the First Step-Club Fit Program, and the Vascular Anomalies Center.

Safe circumcision program

The program uses the concept of ‘task sharing’ in which pediatric surgeons train community health workers, technicians, and midwives to perform safe circumcision of boys under three months of age. The program has been implemented at Sheikh Saeed Memorial Campus, Karachi since June 2016 and at RTEH, Muzaffargarh since December 2017. 3,541 children were circumcised at both sites, and 17 health care workers were trained.

First Step-Club Fit Program

This program provides treatment for clubfoot using the Ponseti method. Since its inception in 2011, more than 1,000 patients have joined the program and more than 250 patients have completed their treatment. The program has been implemented at the Korangi campus since August 2011. RTEH, from December 2017; THQ Manawan, from October 2017; DHQ, Badin, from February 2019; Taluka Hospital, Kandhkot, from 2020 onwards.

Center for vascular anomalies

Vascular anomalies are complex conditions commonly seen in children and can worsen. As a first step towards this initiative, a pulsed dye laser machine – V Beam Perfecta, was donated to Korangi Campus in January 2017 to treat vascular anomalies. The program started at Korangi Campus in January 2017 and at RTEH in March 2021.

Mental health

As PCP aims to provide holistic health care that includes all aspects of well-being, IHNN provides mental health counseling services at 9 primary sites supported by 24 Community Mental Health Officers. So far 130,006 patients have been screened for depression and anxiety while 4,162 patients have been provided counseling services. IHNN also provides counseling through the Psychosocial Counseling Department where patients suffer from trauma or social stigma due to the nature of their illness. Cancer and HIV are given mental health support.

Hypertension Screening and Management Program

Hypertension is a lifelong chronic disease and is highly prevalent. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate of hypertension control from baseline to 50 percent by the end of 2022. The program is working in Community Health Centre, Khorwah, Badin Campus, Korangi Campus, Ghazi Trust Campus, Bhong.

Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition Programme

The Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH & N) program has been an integral part of PCP. The program is running the following projects: an Extension Program on Immunization, a Nutrition Program, a Lactation Management Program, a Safe Delivery Program, Deworming Program, Family Planning, Integrated Management of Childhood Illness, Childhood Pneumonia, and a Midwifery Program.

Community Engagement Center

The initiative empowers local communities at the grassroots level through awareness and training sessions. Under this program, we have trained more than 500 people including community health workers, mental health counselors, programmatic personnel, and institutional partner staff. More than 151,528 community members are also engaged in various topics such as childhood cancer, health and hygiene, mental health, hepatitis C, and vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue.
