GTA 5 Is the best-selling game in the United States today
Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) was released over six years ago, and continues to dominate sales across all platforms supported. In addition to winning hundreds of accolades since the release, the installment has set several benchmarks for current and next-generation games to be followed as well.
Using Twitter earlier today, as of February 2020, researcher Mat Piscatella of The NPD Group released a list of the twenty best-selling games in the USA. After their respective release dates, the games were ranked according to dollar-sales in the country and disregard revenue from microtransactions or post-release expansion packs.

Unsurprisingly, for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, GTA 5 was put at the top of the list, ahead of the Call of Duty series and Red Dead Redemption 2 which was both published by Rockstar Games. The most frightening thing to remember here is that without even paying for microtransactions, GTA 5 carries the bestselling crown. Before 2019, GTA Online had gained more than $1 billion in sales from microtransactions while the base game itself had shipped over 115 million copies worldwide. Such stellar performance may even have left Rockstar Games in a complete daze at this stage.
That having been said, the time has come for a new entry. Rockstar Games was reported to be working on a GTA 6 platform for next-generation consoles. Back in December 2018, an unnamed European third-party developer reported that GTA 6 will release on PlayStation 5 during the 2020 holiday season. The same leak also indicated that Sony has entered into a contract with Rockstar Games to keep GTA 6 exclusive for a whole month to its new-generation console. The atmosphere would also be either Miami or New York.
Rockstar Games has also been spotted as hiring environmental designers to create open-worlds of the “next generation.” Despite Red Dead Redemption 2 already out, it goes without saying that GTA 6 will be the only open-world for Rockstar Games right now. That’s unless Max Payne makes a spectacular comeback.
