We are used to the fact that gaming devices become cheaper over time. But Meta Corporation (better known by its old name Facebook) doesn’t tend to honor tradition. And the first major change in the cost of the Oculus Quest 2 VR helmet , which was once sold for 300 and 400 dollars for versions with 128 (at the very beginning – 64) and 256 GB of space on board, the price tag does not lower, but raises. And not for a couple of bucks, but for a hundred dollars.
The announcement posted on the Oculus blog attempts to explain this as a contribution to the future of VR. Well, because it will be much more pleasant for you to pay a third more for a device if it helps the authors to make a more advanced device and sell it to you already (and even more expensive), right? And not only helmets will rise in price: peripherals in the spirit of an 80-dollar USB cable will also rise in price – even though, unlike a helmet, it used to cost not so hot as sane.
One of the arguments in favor of raising the price of the announcement calls the rise in price of components. But it cannot be ruled out that the real reason is much simpler: in August, the use of Quest 2 will finally be possible without a Facebook account. But the trade in the data of social network users is one of the main sources of profit for the corporation and one of the important reasons that made it possible to sell Oculus Quest 2 so cheaply from the very beginning.
The price increase will happen as early as August 1, but before the end of the year, new customers will try to sweeten the pill a little by giving out a free copy of the Beat Saber VR masterpiece . True, this game, even without discounts, costs only 30 dollars, not 100, but who cares about such trifles? ..
